Local Area Networks
Local Area Network (LAN)is a network that interconnects the devices in a limited geographical area such as a school, office etc. In comparison to larger networks, they have higher data transfer rates.
The most common LAN technologies today are
- Ethernet over twisted pair cables for wired LAN
- WiFi for wireless LAN
A LAN basically comprises of
- End devices - PCs, laptops, servers, printers etc equipped with NICs (Network Interface Cards) or wireless adapters.
- Network devices - hubs, switches, WAPs (Wireless Access Points)
- Cabling for wired devices. The most common type of cabling in use today is twisted pair. Other types are coaxial cables, fibre optic cables etc.
